It can be very intimidating to be in the market for new windows whether it’s for a new home or existing home. You face the juggling act of trying to find the most energy efficient window while hoping not to break the bank. Make the wrong decision and you can be blowing thousands of dollars in product and labor.
Let me introduce you to our main window supplier, Sprouse Windows and Doors.

We think we have one of the best products on the market for several reasons. First of all, we are the only company that has Double Strength glass as a standard glass. Double Strength means just what it implies, twice as hard to break, twice as sturdy and heavy. There are also some other benefits that come with double strength glass that may not come to mind, such as noise reduction and energy efficiency.
Energy efficiency is another big item on the checklist of items to compare when pricing out windows. Two of the items used to rate the Energy efficiency of windows are called the U factor and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient SHGC.
U-Factor measures the rate of heat transfer and tells you how well the window insulates. U-factor values generally range from 0.25 to 1.25 and are measured in Btu/h. ft² °F. The lower the U-factor, the better the window insulates. Code and Duke Power Energy Star rating for windows in North Carolina is now .30.
Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) measures the fraction of solar energy transmitted and tells you how well the product blocks heat caused by sunlight. SHGC is measured on a scale of 0 to 1; values typically range from 0.25 to 0.80. The lower the SHGC, the less solar heat the window transmits. In our area, the code for SHGC is .40
Different windows will have different ratings, our Double Hung New Construction windows come with Low E Extreme Glass which has a U factor of .27 on most windows and the SHGC rating is .21.
All our windows utilize Argon gas to establish the energy efficiency ratings. Because argon gas is denser than air, adding it to the captive air in double-pane windows improves thermal insulation efficiency. Used in conjunction with a special low-E (short for low emissivity) glass coating, argon gas windows bring the temperature of the window closer to room temperature.
The last item I’d like to point out about Sprouse Windows is that their employees care. You are not just calling a call center that knows you as a number and just wants you off the phone asap. You won’t have to wait for answers and resolutions with your problem as the people in the office treat any complaint as if it were the most important thing they are handling that day. I have a lot of suppliers in this business and I can tell you these folks stand miles above any other company.

Knotty Alder Barn Doors, one of our favorite types of wood. Just a clear coat and the grain just comes alive.
This is an item from our Wholesaler so it’s hit or miss if it’s in stock.
It’s a Masonite brand and it’s still in the plastic. They come with Masonite’s heavy duty Track system and handle.
We have other suppliers and other styles available from different suppliers but this deal is too good to be true.
A couple of points to keep in mind:
- Barn doors are 84” in height (A standard door will not work if the header height is standard).
-You do not want the width of the barn door to be the exact same size as your opening. Consider whether you want your barn door to cover the molding on your opening or not.

FIBERGLASS VS. STEEL
The Debate:
I can give you the standard response to “should I buy steel or fiberglass” and will in just a moment. First, however, I believe that you need to look at various factors in deciding the right product for your project.
Is it in an area where there are weather concerns? If it’s in an area that receives exposure to extreme blowing storms you may want to consider fiberglass doors which won’t rust.
If your door is under a covered roof on a porch or in a screened in or sunroom you may just want a steel door.
If your door has panels in the face of the door (for example a 6-panel door), you may want to consider a fiberglass door …. they do not dent when kicked or hit with a bag of groceries.
If you are purchasing a door with full glass (no panels) the issue of denting becomes less of a problem. With a steel door, a dent can easily be repaired on a flat surface. Another point worth noting here is that all steel doors are not the same, there are different gauges of steel with the smaller the number meaning the thicker the steel. Our Masonite doors and Taylor Steel doors are 24 gauge, unlike the other stores that are 26 & 28 gauge.
Fiberglass doors are considered just as strong as a steel door.
What is your budget? Smooth fiberglass is more expensive by about $ 80 - $100.00 per door on commodity doors. On 3/4 glass or Craftsman style, it can be even more. Wood Grain Fiberglass doors are more expensive than Smooth Fiberglass by $ 80 - $ 100.00 per door and if you are staining them the process is a lot more labor intensive and will cost you more.
Wood Grain Fiberglass is easier for an individual painting their own door to finish without worrying about brush strokes.
Wood Grain Fiberglass shows the wood grain through the paint, unlike a wood door… not sure that’s a good thing.
Fiberglass doors are insulated for energy efficiency.
Our steel doors are insulated for energy efficiency (believe it or not, not all steel doors are).
Fiberglass panels are more distinct than a panel punched in steel and have more detail.
Wood Grain Fiberglass can be stained to simulate a real wood door without the maintenance involved in a wood door.
Neither Fiberglass nor Steel doors do well in full exposure direct sun bearing down on them in the hottest part of the day.
If you’ve read down this far and are still looking for my opinion on Steel vs. Fiberglass….
If you can afford it Fiberglass is definitely the way to go.
Most lumber yards buy from a supplier that carries a handful of the designs you see pictured here in different glass sizes. For instance they may have the Sylvan in full glass, 1/2 glass, craftsman, 3/4 glass etc… we have access to all of Western Reflections designs and sizes.

Things you will need to know before you order a door slab:
- If you are ordering just a door slab and plan to use your existing frame, it is important to know that the width on a molded Interior door can vary from the full call size, example: 2/8 = 32” or a door that is 1/4” smaller 2/8 = 31 3/4”. Measure carefully before placing your order. All heights are 80” if you find that your door has been cut down and altered the reasons are usually to accommodate a hardwood floor or thick carpeting. This will result in a door having to be modified to fit your opening.
Things you will need to know before you order a prehung door:
- Do you need a frame thickness of 4 9/16”, 6 9/16”, or do you need a custom frame?
- What color hinges would you like? Standard are Oil Rubbed Bronze, Satin/Brushed Nickel, Black, and Brass.
- Do you need a specific molding to match the rest of your house? Casing normally comes in 2 1/2” (356), 3 1/4” (445) or 3 1/2” (RB3), Another popular option is to run flat stock 1 x 4.
- Do you want Solid Core or Hollow Core? This is not an all or nothing option, feel free to mix them as the layout of your house deems necessary; Do you have a powder room, laundry, child’s room or master bedroom you’d like to deafen the noise in or from?
Pricing varies according to the options you choose:
Additional for Solid Core
Additional for 3 1/4” Casing
Additional for 1 x 4 Casing
Additional for RB3 Casing
Please call for pricing on other styles and options.
Most orders are filled within 2 weeks , prices subject to change.
